7 Reasons to Read to Kids
Reading to children in preschool and kindergarten has many advantages.
1) Increases chances of academic success
Studies have shown that children who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to succeed in school. Reading books also helps them acquire pre-reading skills and learn many concepts that will later help them read. For example, reading a story shows children that we read from left to right.
2) Improve vocabulary, build language and communications skills
Reading books helps children develop and improve vocabulary and helps promote language acquisition. It also enables children to develop their communications skills. The Federal Interagency Forum on Child and Family Statistics, reports that “Reading to young children promotes language acquisition and correlates with literacy development and, later on, with achievement in reading comprehension and overall success in school.”
3) Ensure that you spend quality time with your child
Reading a book together ensures that you spend some quality one-on-one time together without disruptions. We are often so busy working, running our home, taking kids to friends or after school activities, entertaining, etc that we do not spend enough time with our kids. Making story time a part of your daily ritual ensures that we make the time everyday.
4) Develop logical thinking skills
Reading many books helps children develop logical thinking skills.
5) Expand general knowledge
Often books include interesting facts about people, animals or places around the world. This enables children to learn new and interesting facts and improve their general knowledge.
6) Deal with Problems
Many stories and books relate to issues that children face every day and offer a solution that much thought has gone into. They often reassure children that their concerns and emotions are normal and that other children feel the same way too. For example, the book could be about a child that needed to go to the dentist and felt a little scared and nervous. These kinds of stories will later help the reader when he or she faces similar situations.
7) Make Reading a Habit Children get used to
When children are used to reading they are more likely to continue doing so when they are older too. Reading should be thought of as a fun activity and not a chore.
